Panasonic NN-SD997S Prestige 2.2 Cu-Foot 1250 Watt Microwave, Stainless Steel Review

I’m a retired bachelor and I don’t ‘cook’ on the stove. With the quality of frozen and prepared meals these days, I don’t have to. That means my microwave gets used three to four times a day or more for meals.

This microwave cooks evenly and REALLY, REALLY fast! I constantly have to figure out what 60 – 75% of the recommended times would be since it heats food faster than it’s 1,250 watt rating would imply. Most recommended times assume an 1,100 watt microwave, so you’d think this would cook about 10% faster…no, it cooks anywhere from 25 – 40% faster. Great for me and my math! The turn knob makes time entry fast too.

It holds a lot and cleans up easy too.

The ‘Sensor Reheat’ function is fantastic if you have something that doesn’t need stirring or checking…just punch the button and it cooks it to a tee…no math needed.

The programmed defrost settings are not accurate, but I hardly use them anyway, preferring the faster, full power and turn every couple of minutes method for frozen meats and poultry. It defrosts well this way.

I strongly recommend covering food, since a lot of energy is being applied very quickly and the ‘explosions’ can be dramatic! Small trade for this kind of convenience and capability.

Cajun Cookware Enamel Coated Cast Iron 16 Qt Dutch Oven Review

I like to make a week or two of lunches and vacuum seal them in Mason jars. This vessel is perfect for cooking HUGE batches of gumbo-type stews. It cooks evenly and simmers like a dream. Overall, when it is sitting on the stovetop, I am in love. With that said, there are one or two issues I need to mention.

First, the handles are wholly inadequate for something this heavy. Hopefully, you’ve planned your cooking experience well enough there is little need to move this monster while it is full or hot (and certainly not both!), but even adjusting the pot’s position on the stovetop can be an event. Moving it around on my counter while wet and soapy (my sink isn’t nearly big enough to hold this and allow repositioning, is yours?) is a bit of a chore. Don’t even get me started on lifting the hot lid by the handle to check on the soup. That little loop of iron is way too dinky for a hot 10# lid.

Second, a couple of minor chips have developed in the enamel since I started using this about a year ago. Not a big deal, considering my eyes were open when I purchased this. I knew it wasn’t a La Snooty piece when I saw the price tag. These chips are not even vaguely a big deal to me, but in the interest of full disclosure, I mention them here.

I took off a star for these issues (actually, just for the handles. The chips truly don’t rate a knock). Overall, this is a big, wonderful pot. I also have a Lodge 6-quart Amazon sells for a song. I store the Lodge inside the Cajun. The next time I’m shopping for enameled cookware, I’ll shop Cajun first, Lodge second and all the others a hopefully very distant third.
